Enriched Language Arts – Week of October 15-19, 2007
We will begin our first novel study, The Cay, by Theodore Taylor. I have a class set of books that you can use while at school, but I highly recommend purchasing a copy of this book. That way, you can write or highlight in the book and re-read at home. If you do have your own copy of The Cay, please bring it to class everyday.
Monday – Logic and Enrichment with Mrs. Triplett and Mrs. Beauford.
Tuesday – Students will be introduced to a new novel, The Cay. Grammar – Check Ex. 31 & 32 , Recognizing Sentence Fragments, and pages 79 – 80, Correcting Fragments. Writing – Begin discussing 5 paragraph essays. Go over the SCS Scoring Rubric for the TCAP Writing Assessment. (6.1.10) (6.3.13)

Wednesday – Introduce vocabulary words for Chapters 1-3 from The Cay. Students will read and discuss Chapter 1 of The Cay. As we read, students will use context clues to write a definition for the vocabulary words in these chapters. Grammar – Begin discussing run-on sentences, page 458 – 460. Complete Exercise 34 page 458, Recognizing Run-ons. (6.1.3) (6.1.10) (6.1.15) (6.1.21) (6.2.1)

Thursday – Discuss and map the main characters, setting, conflict, plot, and point of view of the story. Review vocabulary words and definitions from Chapters 1 – 3 for test on Monday. Grammar – Check Exercise 35 page 460, Revising to Correct Run-ons. Continue discussing run-on sentences, page 458 – 460. Complete Exercise 45 page 470, Revising to Correct Run-ons. Writing – Begin discussing the 5- paragraph essays. Using the topic from last week, students will complete a t-chart for a 5-paragraph essay. (6.1.3) (6.1.10) (6.1.15) (6.1.21) (6.2.1) (6.3.13)
Homework – Grammar – Complete Exercise 35 page 460, Revising to Correct Run-ons
Friday – Review the sequence of events from Chapters 1 – 2 of The Cay. Review the vocabulary words in Chapters 1 – 3 for a vocabulary test on Tuesday. Students will work in cooperative groups to present the key elements from Chapters 1-2. (6.1.3) (6.1.21) (6.1.10) (6.3.13)
