Language Arts - Week of October 15-19, 2007

We will begin our first novel study, “The Cay,” by Theodore Taylor. I have a class set of books that you can use while at school, but I highly recommend purchasing a copy of this book. That way, you can write or highlight in the book and re-read at home. If you do have your own copy of The Cay, please bring it to class everyday.

Monday – Students will be introduced to a new novel, The Cay. Students will be given the 24 vocabulary words from Chapters 1 - 3. Students will use context clues to find a definition for the vocabulary words in these chapters. Grammar – Complete workbook pages 77 – 78, Recognizing Sentence Fragments, and pages 79 – 80, Correcting Fragments. Writing – Begin discussing 5- paragraph essays. Go over the SCS Scoring Rubric for the TCAP Writing Assessment. (6.1.10) (6.3.13)

Homework- NONE

Tuesday – Students will read and discuss Chapter 1 - 2 of The Cay. As we read, students will use context clues to write a definition for the vocabulary words in these chapters. Grammar - Begin discussing run-on sentences, page 458 - 460. Complete Exercise 34 page 458, Recognizing Run-ons. Writing – Continue discussing 5 paragraph essays. Demonstrate the t-chart and the organization of the essay. (6.1.3) (6.1.10) (6.1.21) (6.3.13)

Homework – Grammar – Complete Exercise 35 page 460, Revising to Correct Run-ons

Wednesday – Discuss the sequence of events from Chapters 1 –2 of The Cay. Discuss and map the main characters, setting, conflict, plot, and point of view of the story. Grammar - Check Exercise 35 page 460, Revising to Correct Run-ons. Writing – Continue discussing 5- paragraph essays. Using the topic from last week, students will complete a t-chart for a 5-paragraph essay. (6.1.3) (6.1.21) (6.2.1) (6.3.13)

Homework – NONE

Thursday – Review the sequence of events from Chapters 1 - 2 of The Cay for a comprehension quiz tomorrow. Students will read and discuss Chapter 3 of The Cay. Review vocabulary words and definitions from Chapters 1 - 3 for test on Monday. Grammar - Continue discussing run-on sentences, page 458 - 460. Complete Exercise 45 page 470, Revising to Correct Run-ons. (6.1.3) (6.1.10) (6.1.21) (6.3.13)

Homework - The Cay Chapter 1 - 2 comprehension quiz tomorrow

Friday – Complete a comprehension quiz on these chapters. Review the vocabulary words in Chapters 1 - 3 for a vocabulary test on Monday. Grammar – Complete Exercise 57 page 472 - 473, Revising to Eliminate Run-On Sentences. Writing - Continue discussing 5-paragraph essays. Using the topic from last week and a completed t-chart, students will begin a 5-paragraph essay. (6.1.21) (6.1.10) (6.3.13)

Homework- Test Monday on the vocabulary words from Chapters 1 - 3 of The Cay
