Monday - Introduce the vocabulary words from Chapters 1 - 3 of The Watsons Go To Birmingham. Begin defining these words using context clues. Read and discuss Chapter 1 from the novel.  Discuss the time period during 1963 and what people were doing during that time.

Tuesday - Enriched LA - Logic & Enrichment with Mrs. Triplett.  For all other Language Arts classes: Read “The Gold Cadillac” page 339 - 349. Discuss the Civil Rights Movement and segregation.  Students will complete comprehension questions and vocabulary after reading the story. Wednesday - Introduce the novel, The Watsons Go To Birmingham - 1963, by Christopher Paul Curtis. Throughout the next couple of weeks, we will be reading this novel in class and completing various activities and graded assignments in and out of class. A copy of the novel will be provided for your child to use at school, but I would highly recommend purchasing a copy of the book. That way, your child can highlight important events and vocabulary words, re-read, etc.

Discuss the time period in which the story takes place and how it is different from the present. Make predictions about what the story will be about. Each classes’ predictions will be recorded on butcher paper and posted in the room. Examine the novel’s key themes: bullies, death, and racism. Discuss these themes. Finish defining these words using context clues, and discuss the definitions. (6.1.4) (6.1.6) (6.1.10) Homework - NONE

Friday - Read and discuss Chapter 3 of The Watsons Go To Birmingham - 1963. Working in cooperative groups, complete a venn diagram comparing 2 characters, Kenny and Byron. Complete comprehension questions from Chapter 3. Grammar - Check workbook pages 51 - 52, Direct Objects. (6.1.21) (6.2.1)
